I took the red line home yesterday instead of the commuter rail. As luck would have it, I ran into one of our old friends: The Musketeer. When I say "old friend", it's slightly misleading. He is one member of a cast of characters that Brendan, Irf, and I used to see on the 94 (bus) a few years ago. The Musketeer is a man of about 40 years who wears a big hat with a big feather in it, musketeer-style. He also sports a utility belt with a number of interesting items on it, including a glove with spikes on the fingertips and a chainmail pouch. This cast of characters also included "Best Friends", a guy in his 30's who appeared pretty normal on the outside, but clearly had some issues. Best Friends would occasionally try to strike up conversations with strangers on the bus and claim that they were his best friend, hence the name. When Brendan was riding with him, he once insisted to the bus driver that she was his Mom and that all of the passengers on the bus were her children. On a rare day, the characters would interact.

I once witnessed a situation on the 94 where The Musketeer was carrying some bags from Trader Joe's with him and Best Friends confronted The Musketeer and told him that he should really do his shopping at Wild Oats instead of Trader Joe's. The Musketeer was not very receptive to this suggestion. Best Friends is no stranger to corporate endorsements. I once saw him shout "Everybody listen to STAR 93.7...It's the best radio station!" to an entire car of people on the Red Line.

In other news, if you haven't been to New Orleans yet, you might never get to see it...without a boat and some scuba gear.
