Ballers and Brawlers: A Night at the Church Basketball Leage

I wanted to fight a 45 year-old man last night. Brendan, Timmy, Jacko and I went over to play hoops in the church league across the street. The 45 year-old in question was getting pretty physical with Brendan, who was guarding him. The guy (who was a pretty big dude) took a spill and Brendan didn't do much to stop him from falling...in fact, he may have expedited the process. The guy may have had a little reason to be upset with Fernald, but on the next play, the guy got the ball, backed Brendan in towards the hoop, then turned and planted his elbow in Fernald's face. I was standing right next to them, and there was no way that this guy was trying to do anything but catch Fernald with an elbow, but the guy claimed it was an accident...then he wanted the ball back, as if there was no foul. Below is a picture of Brendan's forehead after being hit...

Okay, I'm just kidding -- that's not really Fernald. Back to the story...

After watching this situation unfold, I began to get that feeling. My heart starts pounding, my fists clench, my stomach feels like I'm going down the first hill on a rollercoaster. That feeling has preceded any fight I've ever gotten into in my life and many irrational actions that I probably shouldn't have taken in the first place. I had that feeling before I brawled with our foreign exchange student from Spain when I was 13, I had that feeling during college, right before I knocked out a guy who thought it would be a funny prank to dump a bowl of leftovers on my head while I was sleeping at 4:00 AM, and I had that feeling again last night. Luckily, I managed to avoid doing anything irrational, but I did confront the guy and attempted to make him feel like the jackass that he was. Brendan was a good sport about it and actually humored the guy as he went through a "re-enactment" of what had happened, explaining how Brendan had basically run into his elbow. Anyway, things settled down after that, and we still had a good time.
