Reno 911

Last night at the gym, I was in the middle of my workout on the Ellipse machine when the show on the TV in front of me caught my eye. They were showing the red carpet entrances at the Grammy Awards from the night before, showing some of the more unusual styles worn by the celebrities. There was Ben Harper, then Green Day, then Janet Reno. Janet Reno? I could tell that the girl next to me was watching the same TV, and I was tempted to turn and say to her "What the hell is Janet Reno doing at the Grammys?". This would have been odd though, since we were complete strangers. However, a moment later, she turned to me and said, "Wow, she looks great...". I had to assume that this was a completely sarcastic comment, since Janet Reno was the very same woman that was portrayed rather accurately on Saturday Night Live by Will Ferrell (left). I continued the conversation:

Me: Ha, yeah.
Girl: She's lost so much weight, she looks fantastic!
Me: Uh, oh...yeah, I know.
Girl: You can say all you want about her, but she is a very smart woman.
Me: Yeah, but I'm just wondering what she's doing at the Grammys.
Girl: She did such a great job under Clinton.
Me: (Trying to avoid obvious joke) Oh, I know.
Girl: You don't see HIM at the Grammys.
Me: No, I know.

I still have no clue what she was trying to infer with that last comment. Maybe it was a joke? Tough to decipher, particularly from the person who would describe one of the most notoriously ugly public figures in recent history as looking "fantastic".

If you hadn't heard already, the Fleet Center is auctioning off its naming rights for 24 hour segments. Here's the first winner.
