Don't Quote Me on That

It's Wednesday and I've got bills to pay, bags to pack, and questions to answer. Since I will not be paying bills or packing bags via MesteeBlogger, let's cut to the chase:

Mestee,

Which sentence from the following sets is incorect:

Set 1
Once the letter reached him, Hufton shouted "I love you Darth Maul!"

or

Once the letter reached him, Hufton whimpered "I'm tingling in the pants".

Set 2
Is this a case of "Catholic Guilt?"

or

Is this a case of "Catholic Guilt"?

The Kudzu

Hello Kudzu,

Thanks for the question. I'm always happy to have my knowledge tested in public. You've certainly hit on one of my weak points, which is punctuation around quotation marks, but I'll give an educated guess. From Set 1, I believe that the sentence Once the letter reached him, Hufton whimpered "I'm tingling in the pants". is incorrect. If "I'm tingling in the pants" was the name of a poem that Hufton was whimpering, then the period would go outside of the quotes. However, since I don't believe that such a poem or song exists, "I'm tingling in the pants" is an independent statement which should be ended with a period inside of the quotation marks. As for the second set, I will say that Is this a case of "Catholic Guilt?" is the incorrect sentence. "Catholic Guilt" itself is not a question, but simply a phrase being referenced within a sentence that is otherwise a question. I hope that this lesson has been helpful and/or correct.

Cheers,
Brian

I'm actually pretty busy today, so I've got to go now. Before you go, take a look at these sculptures. I've heard of working with clay or marble, but I never really saw the potential of watermelon until now.
