Wacko Jacko

Official Finishing Times:

Elizabeth Cate - 3:21:31
Al Smith - 3:49:20

Congratulations, Liz. Not only did you beat 43 year-old Al Smith of San Antonio, Texas, but you also qualified for next year's Boston Marathon, where you'll be facing Hailu Negussie. Hailu beat you by an hour and ten minutes this year, so you should probably start training right now.

-----

I started my new schedule yesterday, so I'm working 7:00-3:00. I woke up at 5:30 AM yesterday and felt surprisingly good. I couldn't actually believe it was light out already. When I got home from work, I hung out for a little while, waiting for Jacko to come over. He said he'd be over around 5:00, but right before that time, I got hit by a wave of fatigue. I figured I'd lay down and take a quick nap before he arrived.

I woke up and I could feel water dripping on my forehead. Jack was sitting next to me with a water bottle, while his wet fingers hung above me, flicking water towards my forehead.

"I've been doing this for about 3 minutes", Jack explained,"I was wondering if you'd have weird dreams. Let's go play some tennis."

I was dazed, confused, and nowhere near the mental or physical state that would allow me to play tennis. "I'm really tired", I explained.

"Let's get you some fluids!" he said.

We went down to the tennis courts at Dugger Park, and I felt better after a few minutes of hitting around. We wanted to keep hitting around, but didn't feel like taking serves, since that usually slows things down. Jack suggested an "adaptive game" that he had learned, where you serve underhand and only have to get the ball in the larger, rectangular area instead of the two service boxes. This made the game easier, which is why it is used primarily for children learning to play tennis. The game was fun, but because serving was so easy, it was really embarassing to double fault, which we both did a surprising amount of times. I dubbed this the "children's double fault" and made sure to label it as such each time it happened. When actual kids started playing beside us, we felt that it was our time to scrap the adaptive game and get some Chinese food. So we did. The end.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but so will frozen sausages.
