Tennis, Anyone?

Yesterday at 4:30, I had my first scheduled match in my Tennis-League.com round robin tournament. My opponent? Brendan Fernald. We went down to the West Medford courts at Dugger Park to start our showdown, and Brendan thought that the net was a little low, so he cranked it up an inch or so. Then we both spent the afternoon hitting our serves into the net rather than utilizing the "over-the-net" technique, which is preferred by many top tennis players. In the end, Brendan proved victorious, taking the first set 6-4 and the second set 6-1. We didn't have a courtside statistician, but if we did, I believe he would have told you that 75% of the points in the match were won on double faults. Not pretty.

Perhaps I've explained this to you before, but I've recently been experiencing what might best be described as a "glich" in my sense of humor, where the less funny people think I am when I'm trying to be funny, the more hilarious I find it. I can't explain why (perhaps this started with tormenting Irf at Jack's bachelor party?). I believe that this may actually be the definition of "making a fool of one's self". If you're not sure what I mean, here's a good example: I decided to enhance my tennis-league.com player profile by adding a photo. I did not post a photo of myself, like this guy did. Instead, I dove into our back closet full of souveniers, novelties, and party tricks, and arranged this representation of myself. Just imagining the potentially sour and bemused looks on the faces of my future opponents -- all complete strangers, save Brendan -- when they see this picture of "me" is enough to make me weak with laughter. Initially, I wanted to pose with a paper bag over my head while striking a classic tennis pose, but my plan was foiled when there were no paper bags to be found at 23 Boston Ave. I told Brendan that it might be funny to take a picture of him posed with his racquet, looking very serious and wearing a sweater vest and a tie, but he didn't seem so agreeable to that suggestion. Maybe I can talk him into mimicking this pose.

In other news, irony lives on and Natalie Portman shaved her head. Have a good Wednesday.
