Acronymity
Can we just have normal weather? Is that too much to ask? Monday: 500 degrees with 1000% humidity. Tuesday: Break out you winter jackets! Couldn't it be maybe 75 with average humidity? New England obviously did something to upset Mother Nature -- like telling her she looked fat in those jeans.
Sorry if yesterday's entry was boring...I felt a strange sense of obligation to participate in International Webloggers Day, known as InWeDay. This little nickname reminded me of the crazy obsession we Americans seem to have with brevity these days. I feel like Jennifer Lopez might be responsible for this crappy little trend. Ever since she decided to go by "J-Lo", no person or entity seems to have a full name anymore. Maybe it wasn't her. Perhaps it was A-Rod and I-Rod, Alex and Ivan Rodriguez, who started the whole thing. No matter who it was, they are a terrible person.
No more Kentucky Fried Chicken, just KFC, please. The Burger King website offers to help you find a BK, while Reebok has made an attempt at RBK, but nobody has told them that stock-ticker symbols don't get you street cred.
It was sort of funny when the press started calling Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez "Bennifer". However, I think I threw up in my mouth just a little when I heard the term "Brangelina" used to refer to the alleged relationship between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. That tag is now in stiff competition with"Bennifer II".
Maybe this is just a natural extension from the "we want it now" culture that's been budding as of late. On-Demand television, call-ahead seating, wireless internet...all of it let's us watch and eat and communicate with who we want, when we want, where we want without making us wait a minute. How could we possibly have time to utter those few extra syllables?
This might be a stretch, but do you see what I'm getting at here? Maybe someday there will be a backlash where everyone insists on calling everyone by their full name, sending handwritten letters via snail mail, and watching television programs at the same time instead of at their personal convenience. Somehow, I doubt it.
Here's a link to the Onion A.V. Club, which includes interviews with a voice actor from Futurama and the creators of Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
