In West Philadelphia, Born and Raised

Hello blog readers. It's been a while. I hope you're well.

I went to Philly this past weekend to visit Brendan and Steve. Irf also made the trip to the city of brotherly love along with Ryan Fernald and his girlfriend, Amy. Ryan and Amy stayed with Brendan and Sheri, so Irf and I shacked up at Steve's apartment. Luckily, in contrast to our past trips to New York, Irf and I were provided separate sleeping areas. Plus, Irf got to experience a little nostalgia, sleeping on his old futon which now calls Steve's living room its home.

I had a great time on the trip, though I must say that it was initially tainted by the theft of my wallet from the locker room at the Rutgers gymnasium, which occurred about three hours after I arrived in the city. To be fair to Philly, the wallet was actually stolen in Camden, New Jersey. Brendan, Irf, and I had gone to play some hoops with some other law students at the gym. When we got back to the locker room a few hours later, we found our locker open and my wallet was gone. A serious bummer. With no ID, I was somehow going to have to get into bars and, more importantly, be let onto my return flight home. Luckily, it all worked out.

On Friday night, we went out to see the Two Man Gentlemen Band, who were coincidentally playing in Philly at The Fire. They didn't quite seem to match the group of fans that had come to see the show, but nonetheless, pierced and tattooed guys blew their complementary kazoos along with the gentlemen. We said goodbye to the Gentlemen and went out to a bar called Eulogy, where Irf put his free kazoo to good use by serenading Sheri with a stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. I'm pretty sure the people at the next table hated us.

On Saturday, Brendan's law school softball team, RU Legal, was short a few players. By "a few players", I mean practically their whole team was missing. You see, it was the last game of the season, and RU Legal had yet to record a victory. Luckily, we had six extra people ready to suit up. Steve, Irf, Sheri, Amy, Ryan, and I helped RU Legal along to its first victory of the season with some stellar fielding from Irf at shortstop and an inside the park homer from Brendan.

That night we went to get cheese steaks at Pat's/Geno's and Irf and I exposed ourselves as novices by first panicking as we ordered (the guy at the register found our lack of speed unacceptable) and then individually spilling the grease from the cheese steaks all over our shirts as we hurriedly carried our sandwiches away with us.

After dinner, we went to see Brian Regan's show at the Tower Theater. He was hilarious as always, and we got great seats despite the fact that we bought our tickets at the box office just a few minutes before the show started. We headed to a post-show kegger, hosted by one of Steve's friends from UPenn. Irf was thrilled when he spotted a party-goer who he claimed to look like a perfect mix between Jack Oolders and Edgar Renteria. To test his theory, we sent Ryan and Steve on a scavenger hunt to find this mystical man who came to be known as "Jedgar Oolderia". Amazingly, they both located him immediately, partially validating Irf's hypothesis. Steve stayed at the party and the rest of us went out to another bar, where the bouncer asked me what my birthday was, which is apparently sufficient ID in Philly. We later went back to Brendan's apartment and played some serious games of Halo, ate nachos, and generally messed around until the very early hours of Sunday morning. Irf and I got a hold of Steve and met him back at his apartment, passing delivery men on their early morning routes along the way.

On Sunday, Sheri and Amy made breakfast, so we headed back over to indulge in said breakfast and watch the some football. Later, we went to the park next to Brendan's apartment to play some Kubb (pronounced "koob"), which is pretty fun game. Kind of like horseshoes, but with wooden sticks and blocks. Hmm, maybe not that much like horseshoes. There is throwing involved, though.

If anybody has pictures from Philly, send them to me so I can post them here.

I sooo would have done this if I wasn't in Philadelphia this weekend.
